VMware Certified Design Expert on vSphere 4 - Datacenter Design

Here are the steps that need to be taken to become a VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX4). When you already are a VCP4 or VCDX3, there’s an upgrade path available.

1. Be a VMware Certified Professional on vSphere 4 Pass the VCAP - Datacenter Administration Exam
2. Pass the VCAP - Datacenter Design Exam
3. Submit a VCDX4 Application that is accepted
4. Successfully present and defend a VMware Infrastructure Design and Implementation Plan

VMware no longer requires qualifying exams to be taken in a specific sequence. However, required exams must be passed before the start of the application submission and defense process.

VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) is the highest level of VMware certification. This elite group is comprised of design architects highly-skilled in VMware enterprise deployments and the program is designed for veteran professionals who want to validate and demonstrate their expertise in VMware virtual infrastructure.

Step 1 should be broken into 2 steps. Being a VCP4 is the 1st step. Passing the DCA exam and so-on are additional steps. As for the verbiage of the designations, I'm not a big fan on what was decided on. As I stated on Twitter: "Should be VCDX only. I don't even like VCDX3 & VCDX4. VCDX4-DCD is redundant & waste of space. Confusing. Inconsistent." Part of that opinion stems from my background with Microsoft MCSE/MCSA/MCP certification. Microsoft was always real clear they made no designation in the certification acronym itself about which OS track their letters stood for. That said, I understand VMware is not Microsoft and Microsoft does not set the bar on all things (especially when it comes to virtualization). Nonetheless, I do prefer Microsoft's approach to the designations and I think VCDX4-DCD is atrocious - that doesn't roll off the tongue at all. This is my opinion/experience and I will ultimately respect and follow VMware's guidelines. I'll let the people who are mid stream on VCDX3 voice their opinions about the cost of the upgrade in terms of money and time.
