PowerShell | My script is talking to you

PowerShell I added a little gimmick to my Resource Pool script. It actually talks to you, and tell you what’s selected,  after hitting the exit button you’ll receive greetings from Eric Sloof. :-)  SAPI is short for Speech Application Programming Interface (Speech API). SAPI is built into Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Vista; if you’re running either of those operating systems then you already have everything you need to add voice and sound effects to your PowerShell scripts. Just paste the following code at your PowerShell prompt.

$Voice = New-Object -com SAPI.SpVoice
$Voice.Speak( "The resource pool is adjusted", 1 )

PowerShell Scripting Contest | The Resource Pool Calculator

PowerShell This Dynamic Resource Pool Calculator recalculates all your resource pools. Depending on the number of virtual machines per resource pool, the number of reservations for memory and CPU is automatically lifted after running the Dynamic Resource Pool Calculator. The script also respects the existing individual virtual machine reservations and adds those value’s to the total RP sum.

When a virtual machine doesn’t have a reservation, the virtual machine memory is used to calculate the Resource Pool reservation. When the $MemFactor is 2, the virtual machine memory is divided by 2. This means a Virtual machine with 1024 MB lifts the Resource Pool reservation with 512 MB. The $CPUFactor is multiplied by the number of CPU’s. This means a virtual machine with 2 CPU ‘s will create a lift of 1024 MHz on the Resource Pool.

User Interface Resource Pool Calculator
This script can present a GUI to the end user or can be run interactive from the PS command line. If no arguments are specified, the GUI starts. If a resource pool is passed as an argument, this resource pool will be processed without the GUI.

VM4ALL.COM is down

During the transfer of VM4All.COM to another provider, there went something wrong. I hope to have the site up and running at the beginning of next week. More and more people are writing software based on the SDK and created a lot of little handy tools. On the other side there are some larger company’s who also created all kinds of applications to support VMware ESX server and Virtual Center. The vm4all.com website provides a complete list of all these tools and applications.

Tool | Desktops v1.0

Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell over at Sysinternals created Desktops v1.0. Desktops allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Read email on one, browse the web on the second, and do work in your productivity software on the third, without the clutter of the windows you’re not using. After you configure hotkeys for switching desktops, you can create and switch desktops either by clicking on the tray icon to open a desktop preview and switching window, or by using the hotkeys. Run Desktops now from Live.Sysinternals.com

VMworld 2008 | Twitter page is live

Twitter is an online service that enables you to broadcast short messages to your friends or "followers." It also lets you specify which Twitter users you want to follow so you can read their messages in one place. Twitter is designed to work on a mobile phone as well as on a computer. All Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters, so each message can be sent as a single SMS alert.

You can post to this "VMworld" feed from your Twitter account by posting:
d vmworld "message" (replace "message" with your text to display)

New Vizioncore products to be highlighted at VMworld200

vRanger Pro v4.0 is Vizioncore’s next generation industry-standard backup and restore solution with increased speed and scalability. vRanger Pro 4.0 also shrinks the storage requirements for backups by introducing incremental support.   This version will also deliver  near instantaneous restores of files, finally eradicating the reason for procuring file level agents, as well as a simplified UI, upgraded reporting capability, improved load balancing,  and platform support for ESXi.

vOptimizer Pro enables the reclamation of space taken on ESX datastores by automating the periodic resizing of Windows-based virtual machines. vOptimizer also improves VM performance and reduces the footprint of Windows by enabling the periodic streamlining of the operating system via the deletion of selected files and services.  Results include reduced enterprise storage costs, more efficient VMs and a high return optimization best practice for ESX administrators.

vFoglight (formerly vCharter Pro)  has been renamed  in order to signal a software redesign to a console/cartridge architecture (as utilized by Quest Foglight).   vFoglight retains key features like the single pane of glass view in multiple virtualization layers or multiple VirtualCenters, diagnostic alerting and will soon offer monitoring for key strategic resource intensive applications.

New!  vAutomation Suite (Early Demonstrations)

A series of automation oriented products will be released in late 2008 and thru 2009 that will offer virtualization integration, orchestration and heterogeneous management solutions. Come see demos of:
• vWorkflow enables the creation of automated processes for leading virtualization platforms, making it possible to:
o Integrate and orchestrate existing management tools and infrastructure for greater agility and responsiveness
o Extend leading virtual server platforms with customized workflows
o Reduce manual maintenance tasks to reduce total cost of ownership
o Automate ITIL processes to improve efficiency and compliance
• vControl is an automated, orchestrated, workflow driven, virtual machine environment ‘director’ that delivers web-based virtual machine management and control, basic backup and restore, high availability (HA), and disaster recovery. Built on a highly scalable grid architecture, vControl is a heterogeneous management solution that scales to meet the needs of multi-datacenter environments.

The iTripoli Admin Script Editor Rocks

Admin Script Editor (ASE) ASE continues to innovate with its recent release of version 3.5. This latest release introduces active debugger support for PowerShell scripts, several new templates for the Logon Script Builder and enhancements to the script formatting feature. The Active Debugger integrated with ASE now provides full support for both VBScript and PowerShell. When debugging, you can even hover over values for tooltips that provide details on the object as well as a hyperlink to take you to the objects' listing in the Locals window. Finding problems in scripts just got a whole lot easier with this intuitive and easy to use debugger. If you have not checked out the Logon Script Builder (LSB), now is the time. Even if you have already been using the Logon Script Builder, you will immediately PowerShell being the exception, it is necessary to rely upon a third-party control in order to render forms and interact with them using a scripting language. Admin Script Editor provides support for KiXforms, a freeware control deployed as a single DLL file which you can leverage by any language supporting COM. As PowerShell may address the .NET Framework directly, it can create native Windows forms, something ScriptForm Designer also fully supports.
