VMworld 2011 Las Vegas – Video Trailer

I’m very excited about this year’s VMworld conference to be held in Las Vegas at the 29th of August 2011. Not only because it’s the first time I’m attending as a speaker but also because I’ll try to capture all the excitement in and around the Las Vegas Venetian hotel with my new HD Video Camera.  I’ve created a short teaser trailer. The cool thing about this trailer is that the voice over is done by Jeroen van Inkel. He’s a famous Dutch DJ who created this jingle for me when I was the host at my own weekly radio show called the Twilightzone years ago. Hope you enjoy it and see ya in Las Vegas.

Mythbusters Goes Virtual - has made it to the finals

If you’re planning on visiting the VMworld 2011, August 29 – September 1 at The Venetian in Las Vegas,  we would be honoured when you’re attending our Mythbusters Goes Virtual break-out session.

Some things never change, or do they? vSphere is getting new and improved features with every release. These features change the characteristics and performance of the virtual machines. If you are not up to speed, you will probably manage your environment based on old and inaccurate information. The vMythbusters have collected a series of interesting hot topics that we have seen widely discussed in virtualization communities, on blogs and on Twitter. We’ve put these topics to the test in our lab to determine if they are a myth or not.

The session will be presented by Mattias Sundling and Eric Sloof.

This year you can have a say in what sessions you would like to see at VMworld 2011. Session Voting is open from May 9 till May 18. You can vote on what sessions you would like to see. I’ve submitted 4 sessions which are available for public voting. Click on the “Thumbs Up” symbol next to the Session ID. You will receive confirmation that your vote has been counted - Thanks in advance :-)

1400 Performance Troubleshooting in the Cloud with vCenter Operations
1841 vSphere Advanced Performance Troubleshooting with ESXTop
1844 VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP-DCA) Exam Preparation Tips
3067 Myth busters Goes Virtual

Monitoring performance in the cloud requires special skills, there are many factors that influence the performance of a virtual machine running in the cloud. The most important part of solving performance problems is the right interpretation of the observed metrics. Everyone knows that a high CPU Ready value is an indicator of an CPU problem. But how high can or may it be? Is host CPU saturation the only cause of high CPU Ready values? This session will show you how to observe symptoms using vCenter Operations, track down the performance problem, find the root cause, bring the you guidelines for resource allocation settings and interpret the metrics and their best practise values.

This session is an Introduction to WaveMaker. WaveMaker is a visual development tool that lets everyone quickly build and deploy great-looking web and cloud applications. With WaveMaker, you can build a complete, 3-tier web application in minutes!

If you have wondered about best practice values regarding Ready-Time, Storage Latency, Ballooning and swapping, this session will bring you the answers and insight into the technology and components behind these important metrics.

After achieving your VCP certification you might want to take it a step further and go for the VMware Advanced Professional Datacenter Administrator certification. While reading through the blueprint a lot of people feel a bit overwhelmed with the amount of skills you must have. In this session you will learn how to prepare for a successful completion of the VCAP-DCA exam and you will get some tips and tricks which can be useful while taking the exam.

So what’s up with Integrien?

In the last part of the VMworld 2010 keynote VMware’s CEO Paul Maritz was referring to a new kid on the block called Integrien. It’s a relatively small company but they got some awesome products. Integrien recently launched a new product called AliveVM. I’ve managed to capture some screenshots and a brief description but it isn’t available for download anymore. The website says: VMware has acquired Integrien. The purchasing of this product is temporarily suspended, until further notice.

AliveVM is a revolution in real-time performance management for VMware administrators, built on the industry leading, enterprise-class Integrien Alive platform. AliveVM fills the existing gap for automated performance management for VMware administrators with sophisticated learning-based analytics and an elegant and easy-to-use web-based interface. With AliveVM, VM Administrators are no longer forced to rely on classic monitoring tools and techniques that provide limited insight into the performance of their virtual infrastructure. With the introduction of AliveVM, they are provided with detailed behavioral analysis of the entire virtual environment. AliveVM also provides a real-time summary of performance Health, Workload usage, and Capacity forecasts for each and every virtual element (e.g., Virtual Machines, ESX Servers, Clusters, Storage LUNs and Network elements). Whether your virtual environment spans 50 Virtual Machines or 50,000, AliveVM will vastly simplify your performance management and virtual infrastructure optimization.

ntpro.nl - View my 'AliveVM Screenshots' set on Flickriver
At this moment the product is being re-branded and the interface is undergoing some design changes as well, VMware will probably re-launch AliveVM in the first quarter of 2011.

VMworld 2010 Copenhagen – Unpacking the gadgets – The nComputing L300

So I just got back from the VMworld in Copenhagen and it’s time to start unpacking the gadgets. The first gadget comes from the nice people over at nComputing who gave me an L300 for free. In return I had to write a blog article. Gadget number two is also demoed, as I’m wearing a cool official orange VMware 2010 LAB STAFF shirt :-)

With the L300, watching DVD-quality video on up to a 1920x1080 display comes standard for most common media formats. The game-changing access device comes packaged in a sleek low-power package that can be easily mounted on a monitor or secured to a desk. Powered by a new NComputing Numo System on a Chip (SoC), the L300 uses patent-pending hardware technology to decode and scale multimedia locally, eliminating network strain. The L300 access device costs less any other thin- or zero-client options and a quarter of the cost of desktop PCs. In combination with the NComputing vSpace software, it enables VDI solutions at one-third the price of traditional offerings.
