Wat is VMware View 4?

VMware View 4 is de nieuwste geïntegreerde desktop-virtualisatie-oplossing, waardoor kosten voor destops gereduceerd worden, hoge mate van beveiliging geboden wordt en desktop beheer enorm vereenvoudigd!

VMware View 4 maakt gebruik van de nieuwste versie van vSphere, waardoor de meest recente virtualisatie technologieën benut worden. Een voorbeeld is PCoIP, een nieuw protocol voor desktops, wat specifiek ontwikkelt is voor het leveren van virtuele desktops over het WAN of LAN.

Dit biedt een enorme optimalisatieslag voor de beschikbare bandbreedte zonder het verlies van de gebruikersproductiviteit.

Site Recovery Manager in a Box

Thomas ten Dam has entered the world of VMware bloggers. He created tendam.info and has already published some interesting articles. His latest addition is “SRM in a Box”: configured! In this article he shows a working SRM environment hosted in Workstation 6.5 and as shared storage he used the free Netapp Simulator.

After a few difficulties i have managed to set up a SRM in a Box configuration with the free Netapp Simulator. The problem i had in the previous post, was because i had no data in the volume that has to be snapmirrored. So i created a vm and did an snapmirror update and voila, the LUN was shown in the array configuration.

The big problem for a consultant or engineer is how to test and learn how SRM is working. If you want to test this, expensive hardware must be available for quite some time. You need double storage, a couple of esx servers and some hardware to host 2 domain controllers, virtual center servers and SQL servers. And how about a demo for a customer? You can’t have all the expensive hardware at your site for just showing how it works.

Dutch VMware User Group Event 2008

After three successful meetings in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Dutch VMware User Group announced it’s time for a fourth one! They would like to invite you to attend the 2008 VMware User Group Event on the 12th of December at the Nieuwegein business centre. With over 3100 members this year’s event will become massive. I’ll be presenting at this event. My presentation is called Managing VI3 with PowerShell, but at the 12th of December maybe it’s time to rename it to Managing VI4 with PowerShell.

Registration is open by the end of the week, Viktor van den Berg launched the Dutch VMUG event website with the agenda. It looks prommissing.

The Xpert Training Group V-Event videos are online

Today the Dutch market leader in virtualization training XTG delivered the Dutch virtualization event. The Xpert Training Group V-Event is the key virtualization event of the year. At this event attendees received the latest product updates and information, they saw live demos and got a deep level of understanding required to turn their infrastructure challenges into a competitive advantage through server, desktop and storage virtualization solutions and technology. I was one of the attendees and recorded some Dutch video footage which is viewable at XTG’s Vimeo page.

This morning I attended a prep session at the Xpert Training Group in Gouda. While I was there I captured some video footage. In the video You see Viktor van den Berg rehearsing his keynote.

A happy new year for Net4kids

This year I won’t send any Christmas and happy new year cards. Instead of sending those cards I will support the Net4kids foundation. As an ambassador for Net4kids I’m proud to see that the money this foundation receives is well spent on important projects . Net4kids is the internet market place for child aid projects. TSX 2007 Nice

Het is bijna zover, volgende week maandag start voor mij de VMware TSX in Nice, voor de trainers is een extra dag ingelast om ze op de hoogte te brengen van de allerlaatste nieuwtjes. Tevens heb ik maandag de gelegenheid om vast mijn badge op te halen. De officiële opening zal dinsdagmorgen om exact negen uur plaatsvinden. Aanstaande zondag vlieg ik met Transavia vanaf Rotterdam Airport naar het zonnige zuiden. Tijdens mijn verblijf probeer ik alle geïnteresseerde thuisblijvers op de hoogte te houden door interviews en filmpjes op mijn website te plaatsen. Hou mijn weblog dus goed in de gaten of abonneer je op een RSS feed.

Nero Recode

Ruim een jaar geleden heb ik een video camera van het merk Sony aangeschaft. Om wat specifieker te zijn de DCR-DVD-92. Dit apparaat brandt de film direct op een mini DVD. Om de film daarna te bewerken is redelijk wat inventiviteit nodig. Zo gebruikte ik voorheen Ulead Video Studio 8, maar sinds de aanschaf van mijn nieuwe laptop met Windows Vista werkte deze software niet meer. Dan maar op zoek naar een andere oplossing en wat schetst mijn verbazing. Windows Vista is standaard voorzien van een aardige Video Tool namelijk Windows Movie Maker 6. Deze Movie Maker is echter alleen in staat om MPEG, AVI en nog wat andere standaard formaten in te lezen maar op mijn mini DVD staan VOB bestanden, dus dat werkt niet. Of toch wel, ik heb de VOB bestanden naar mijn harddisk overgezet met behulp van een nieuwe optie binnen Nero. Het gaat om de optie Recode, hiermee zet je heel gemakkelijk een VOB bestand om naar een Mpeg 4 bestand. Nu kan ik het Mpeg 4 bestand direct inlezen in Movie maker. Het toevoegen van effecten als een titel en transitie en het uiteindelijke branden of publiceren naar internet is een fluitje van een cent.

Ik heb al enige tijd www.vmware-tsx.com als startpagina ingesteld staan. (Ja echt waar ) Met nog drie dagen te gaan klikte ik achteloos nog eens op de agenda en tot mijn grote verrassing was er een nieuw onderdeel toegevoegd. Het gaat om de Event Guide, in dit PDF bestand zie je een uitgebreid overzicht van presentaties, tijden en labs. Wil je wat interessants te lezen hebben in het vliegtuig, druk hem af en neem hem mee.

TSX agenda online

De agenda van het VMware TSX2007 symposium staat online en ziet er imposant uit. Tot op heden hebben zich duizend mensen ingeschreven. Tijdens dit symposium worden een groot aantal VMware presentaties gegeven en daarnaast zullen er ook nog eens 25 partners acte de presence geven.

Wanneer je aanlogd op het service console bestaan er een aantal ongedocumenteerde commando’s waar hele nuttige dingen mee gedaan kunnen worden.

Zo ontdekten Viktor van den Berg en Christiaan Roeleveld dat het mogelijk is om met het onderstaande script een ESX host in maintenace mode te zetten. Dit kan handig zijn wanneer je een script laat draaien wat alle updates installeert.

Verder heb ik zelf nog een aardige optie gevonden, een commando waarmee je via het service console kunt achterhalen wat voor type kaart in welk PCI slot zit.

Interview met Viktor van den Berg

Tijdens de VI-3.0-DSA train the trainer sessie onder het voorzitterschap van Bouke Groenescheij heb ik even de gelegenheid gehad om Viktor van den Berg te interviewen.
Viktor is trainer bij XTG in Gouda en geeft op 26 april een presentatie tijdens de studiedag virtualisatie in Hoevelaken.

Een oude jingle in een nieuw jasje

Na enig experimenten met Audacity is het dan toch gelukt. Ik heb een oude jingle in een nieuw jasje gestoken. De stem die je hoort is van Jeroen van Inkel. The Twilightzone is het radioprogramma waarin ik ruim tien jaar te horen was als presentator. Dit programma werd tot eind 2003 iedere vrijdagavond live uitgezonden op de Radio Salsa, de lokale omroep van Papendrecht. Binnenkort zal The Twilightzone echter weer in ere hersteld worden en op een volledig eigentijdse manier opnieuw te horen zijn, maar daarover later meer.

Audacity

Terwijl ik deze week langs het kantoor van Bouke Groenescheij liep werd mijn nieuwsgierigheid gewekt door een techno beat die zachtjes uit de speakers van zijn laptop schalde. Al snel zat ik naast hem te kijken naar een zelf gecomponeerd stukje muziek. Mijn vraag was natuurlijk direct met welke software je zulke mooie dingen kunt bewerken. In mijn achterhoofd had ik natuurlijk mijn pas aangeschafte Edirol R-09 die ik binnenkort ga inzetten. Uiteindelijk kwam het hoge woord eruit de software is gratis te gebruiken en heet Audacity. Dit weekend ga ik ermee aan de slag op mijn nieuwe laptop, ik hou je op de hoogte.
