Today VMware invited their Benelux Partners at the VMware Partner Forum 2008 which was held in the Brasschaat, Belgium. I attended the forum and managed to collect some video footage. You can see a part of the opening keynote from Bas van Kesteren, Marc Groetelaars and the infamous Richard Garsthagen. During this Benelux VMware Partner event, the attendees were informed of VMware’s vision & strategy, market opportunity, product roadmap and also marketing activities. They also learned about new sales, presales and marketing tools, and had the opportunity to network with peers and the Benelux VMware team.
We can expect some challenging one-liners again since Hugo Peeters is back from his vacation. Hugo was offline the past few weeks enjoying the luxury live in California. During the VMworld in Las Vegas Hugo’s site peetersonline.nl was mentioned in the PowerShell presentation from Carter Shanklin. After Carter’s presentation ended I was able to attend a little interview where he mentioned Hugo’s site again. Hugo already posted two new articles:
Creating a Powershell script CAN be quite difficult. How to get the output you want? Where to start? Let me try to get you started by providing a structure you can follow. I’m not saying this is THE way, but it’s MY way. Hope it helps you and please do comment if you have additions or another way!
Hi everybody, I’m back! Before you ask, I’ve had a great holiday, thank you. Now let’s continue having fun with Powershell and the VI Toolkit! I’ve showed you a trick earlier that allows you to find your Virtual Center Server Settings. The License Server settings for instance. But changing these settings can prove to be quite a challenge.
One of my students pointed me to a website with a real cheap NFS server, besides that it only consumes around 20 watts.
The Grab’n’GO Media Store is a powerful double bay HDD SATA solution for sharing & store media content like music, photos and videos at home or at the office. The built in UPnP AV media server offers easy access to all your files through compatible media players (like the Grab’n’GO wireless media player) and stream media without using a PC. Besides your media backup, it’s a full function NAS server with 500 MHz CPU and built-in FTP server for file access via Internet and access-right management features to give users different read and/or write permission in the (Gigabit) network. To guarantee optimal functionality, the CH3SNAS can be configured as Standard, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1, so it’s up to you to set your priority to safety, flexibility or speed.
This is a little site about DNS-323 and Conceptronic CH3SNAS which is low-end 2 SATA Drive Bay network-attached storage (NAS) with RAID0/RAID1/JBOD feature.
Lance Berc, Corporate Architect over at VMware created some PowerShell scripts to automate the ESX configuration. These scripts automate much of the drudgery needed to incorporate a fresh ESXi or ESX Classic Server into a Virtual Center DRS cluster. Automation is the backbone of scalability. Via Vinternals.

Today the Dutch market leader in virtualization training XTG delivered the Dutch virtualization event. The Xpert Training Group V-Event is the key virtualization event of the year. At this event attendees received the latest product updates and information, they saw live demos and got a deep level of understanding required to turn their infrastructure challenges into a competitive advantage through server, desktop and storage virtualization solutions and technology. I was one of the attendees and recorded some Dutch video footage which is viewable at XTG’s Vimeo page.
I have received a free copy of “VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center” from one of the authors, Jase McCarty this morning.:-) I’m speed reading trough it and believe that these guys have covered everything you need to know when setting up your ESX environment. Finally an alternative to the VI3 install and configure course guide.
The VMware ESX server is vital to virtualization methods used to perform server consolidation, software development, test automation, legacy Windows migration, and more. VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center is an extremely valuable and distinctive resource. The authors present surprising new ways of using virtualization to accomplish tasks now performed at the physical level. All areas of business are examined, with text that features technical information and best practices, including business challenges and technology breakdowns to expedite effective allocation of time and resources.

Mike DiPetrillo over at VMware posted a PowerShell script on his weblog. This script is able to Quick Migrate a VMware virtual machine from one ESX server to the other.
One of the things that was also brought up over and over again in the debate was the fact that Quick Migration was free and came with Hyper-V since it was based on Microsoft Clustering whereas VMware VMotion was only available in the most expensive Enterprise SKU of VMware Infrastructure. So there it was - I need to create Quick Migration for the lower priced and free VMware solutions. I went off, built my little script, and showed it off at VMworld. There was a GREAT response to it so I'm posting it here for others to use or improve upon however you see fit.
