The Dutch VMUG event attracts a lot of attention. In September 2005, the first time this event was held the number of attendees was around 50. This number has risen over the years. The next event will take place on the 11th of December and is open for registration. The Dutch VMUG expects around 600 attendees. It looks like this eventĀ has become some sort of mini VMworld. The preliminary agenda with 3 parallel tracks is online and when you take a close look at it you will see that Eric Sloof is going to talk about Managing VMware vSphere 4 with the Virtualization EcoShell. One more reason to attend. ;-)

New in Virtualization EcoShell 1.2 - Best Practices Filters
A few days ago, Scott Herold has released version 1.2 of the Virtualization EcoShell. This new version contains a very cool feature called āBest Practice Filtersā. These filters allows you to easily perform daily checks of common faulty configuration issues like a Snapshot hunter, VMs with CROM Connected and Hosts with NIC at Half Duplex. Iāll give a demo of the Virtualization EcoShell 1.2 at the Dutch VMUG event and Scott is joining me on stage to do a sneak peak of the 1.3 version.Ā I couldn't wish for a better side-kick :-)

Massive I/O power increase using EMC PowerPath/VE
Youāre about to enter a world where creating a Virtual Machine hot-clone is done faster than powering it off. My former Capgemini colleagues, Ernst Cozijnsen and John van der Sluis recently implemented EMC PowerPath/VE, here's their story.
It took the guys in storage land a long time to deliver.... But finally it's there.... A really great kick-ass plug-in to boost your vSphere 4 storage performance through the roof.
In prior versions of ESX the Native Multi Pathing āNMPā plug-in was available for balancing the storage load over different Fiber Channel HBAās and storage paths to your storage array(s). Beside that itās not really āMulti Pathingā it had another major disadvantage of being able to stress your storage array in such a way it could crash. (Yes.. we know how it works and yesā¦ we succeeded in this). This crashing didnāt had much to do with ESX but more with how the storage arrays handle the different request coming in from the FA port and distributing the load across the storage processors inside the box.
If commands for e.g. LUN-A come in via 2 different FA ports on the array which all have their own storage processor, there needs to be a lot of āinter communicationā between the storage CPUās inside the box. For a normal environment this is no issue but when you start to stretch the limit this can and will cause major concerns. Therefore I have written this script.

Attending the VMworld? Make sure to register as a VMUG member
Fellow vExpert Rod Gabriel, the Wisconsin Area VMUG Leader points out that a VMUG registration is required in order to be invited to the VMWorld VMUG activities and get the official VMUG shirt.
For those of you who are attending VMworld, you should make sure to be officially registered as a VMUG member.
